Fernando Alonso also whilst taking part in a charity event in association with CajAstur claimed he believes he is in his prime and is arriving at the right time in the right team.

“I’m joining the best team in the world, Ferrari, and I’m arriving at the best moment of my career. Right now I feel like I’ve never felt before. I think I’m at my best moment as a driver and as a person”

Joining Ferrari maybe a positive but there are stronger teams and drivers in the competition. While Alonso’s determination is never in doubt there are no assurances on Ferrari’s form with most of the hype around vague 2009 regulations cited as the reason for their poor form.

Much was made of Fernando’s return to Renault, which in the end yielded two mediocre years with 2009 being the worst. 2008 was saved in some ways due to two wins that Alonso managed. One with a bit of fortuitous luck at Japanese GP and the other being a disgraced race fixture by Renault F1 racing team at Singapore.

Never one for being over optimistic Alonso has thrown caution to the wind “”I hope that joining Ferrari means winning titles to share with Asturias and Spain.”

With Mercedes confirming Michael Schumacher’s sensational come back, Vettel – Webber at Redbull and reigning world champion Jenson Button at Mclaren, it adds even more competition, there will be no dominance by any one driver in such an environment unless a particular team gets the technical superiority in their cars.

It remains to be see if Ferrari’s questionable plans to abort 2009 development midway in-order to prepare for 2010 will bare fruit. Renault tried this strategy for two years in a row and produced terrible projects.  Ex-Honda/Brawn GP are only the recent exceptions that produced a title winning car. Ferrari did produce a good project in 2006 after a poor 2005 season, but that was under different leadership and skill sets of engineers who are now no longer with the Scuderia.

The first signs will be known in the very first few days of winter testing.
