In a rather complicated manner, what was rumored to be a possible 2011 deal, transformed into a 2010 deal for Fernando Alonso Diaz to join Scuderia Ferrari. This was made possible through the mutual agreements reached between Matias Kimi Raikkonen and Ferrari to end their valid contract for 2010 earlier than planned. The contract is for 3 confirmed years starting from 2010 with possible options for 2 more additional years. Alonso dressed in red

Fernando Alonso claimed Driving a single-seater from the Prancing Horse is everybody’s dream in this sport and today I have the opportunity to make this dream come true’. This may come as surprise as Alonso made the same claims  back in December 2006 when he signed up with Mclaren for 2007.  Though that dream ended up in a mess with Mclaren blatantly favoring home grown driver Lewis Hamilton.

Kimi Raikkonen’s departure comes amidst outstanding performances in the underdeveloped and halted F60 project midway in the season, with 1 win at Spa and several podium finishes to his credit. Arguably a highly car flattering performance in what was essentially a midfield car by the end of the season, leading many to point towards new title sponsor Banco Santander’s handy work in financing the expensive payout for Kimi’s willingness to end the contract early at the same time financing Ferrari’s title sponsorship and possibly Fernando’s salary (around 17 million Euro per year or $ 25 million approx )

Ferrari halted focused development of the F60 after the last major upgrade for the Spanish GP with only minor tweaks and enhancements along the way to the season finale. Sporadic testing of parts in free practice on race weekends in preparations for 2010 were more of the normal given the strategic decision to halt development early.

Alonso is confident of Ferrari’s strong fight back next season. He will be partnered by Brazilian Felipe Massa.
